Monthly Diary
It's been a long wait
Well I've been working non stop, been without a working computer thus without the internet for some time as well still having some problems but will get past them and move on. At the moment I'm working 5 days a week which is taking some getting used to (don't like it at all) but we'll see what happens.

There's not a lot happening in the veggie garden at the moment I have photos from the last season and will get through those and put them up over the next few weeks, been working on the house so finding time is not so easy at the moment.  I have also taken footage of my backyard as I've had a few emails from people wondering what the rest of the yard looks like, so I'll put them on a new page all about the plants I have or at least the ones that I know the names of :-).

Again I'm still to finish the big job redoing the veggie garden and will have video footage of the whole lot so you can see what's gone into it all. I haven't planted anything for the cooler month so I can get some work done around the place but will have some special things to show for the next summer crop.

Till then happy planting.

The veggie patch is doing great 14-12-03
First of all I'd like to say merry Christmas to everyone who comes to this site and hopefully enjoy it.

I've been lucky enough to get a new job (have had for the past 6 months) at Australia's leading wholesale nursery "Floriana" and I'm loving the job, but it has taken a lot of my time up so this year I'm doing a Floriana veggie garden that helps me as I don't have to worry about seeding my own veggies this year as I get them from work saving me time, I will have my own section for this and it's also going to put my work to the test on just what you can expected from the Floriana vegetable selection but at this stage they are doing great I'll have to photos for you to look at from the front page so just click on Floriana veggies to look, will be up in the next day.

I've also harvested the potatoes and will put those photos up for you as well but I can tell you that I've tried 3 types so far and they are great.

The videos are on there way 01-09-03
Well after some time spent on the computer I've been able to get the videos on there way, I'm happy with the way they have worked out and I think you will enjoy them, I may still have to play around with the format that they will end up being as I'm not sure if everyone with older computers will be able to play them, if you can update to the latest windows media player that would help.

Please email me if you have any problems so I can get it all sorted out so everyone can watch the clips.

We are on the go again 26-7-03
Well what have I been doing over the past couple of months, well I've been working on the house as I've always wanted a workshop to play around with wood and it should be finished in the next month so that's going to be great.  Other than that the veggie garden is well over grown as I have done nothing at all in it but that's all about to change with my new crop of Potatoes and don't think I've lost interest in the veggie patch because that just wont happen, I didn't plan on doing anything over this winter as I'd planned on working on the house and getting it out of the way before getting back into the garden, I'm also hoping to get the re-vamp done on the veggie garden as well before putting in the summer crop and I should be able to but wont get started on that for a month.

Anyway back to the Potato crop I'll be putting in, in the next few days, I'm very excited about them, I have six different varieties going in, I really cant wait.  The varieties are Bison, Desiree, Toolangi Delight, Pontiac, Ruby Lou and Nicola, I got them all from The Diggers Club here in Australia (I'm lucky enough to live just 2km away from them) for anyone interested in the diggers club here is the link to there website http://www.diggers.com.au/ I've been a member for the past 2 years and have just paid up for another 2, I've found it great.

If you remember a few months back I was telling you all that I want to put up some videos for everyone to see things done in the garden and that I was looking at making the video a bit better in quality, well all my problems are over and after months and months I've got a new computer just for video editing and it does some really great things so it's all on the move so look out for lots of video clips coming your way.

Well I'll leave it there and give you all an update in about a week (to catch up on my monthly diary) to let u know how the planting went.

It's all quiet in the veggie garden 4-5-03
Nothing much is happening at the moment in the veggie garden, I haven't planted anything else as I'm getting ready to re-do the whole garden in boxes like I said last month, I might put in some Spinach though as it would be nice to have some fresh. Will be able to write more next time as I would have started outside by then.
Coming to the end 5-4-03
Well the season for me is coming to an end and I have to say it's been a great season for me when I really haven't got into it this year for a few reasons mainly because I've been so busy with other things this year and that's been a little disappointing but I'm planning on freeing up some time very soon and making a whole new look veggie patch that will make it look nicer but more to make it manageable, rather than having one very big veggie patch I'll be getting some old railway sleepers and making veggie boxes with crushed rocks around for paths, there will be about eight of them so I can get right into the rotating each year and be able to walk around them all giving me much better access for the picking and planting.  I will then also have one open (no sleepers) for things like pumpkins that can just go wild.

I have heaps of veggies in the garden and can't keep up with them at the moment but will be freezing them very soon before it's to late and that would be a shame.  I will then be digging it all over and getting ready for next summer and because I'm doing so much to it before then I won't be planting a winter crop as it will just get in the way while doing the work, I will be planting some broad beans though in one spot from the beans I grew last year for green manure.  And yes I'm still working on the updates I've been saying for ages now :-).  Till next time happy gardening.

Pick pick pick 27-02-03
And that's all I've been doing, picking everything from Carrots to Zucchini it's been great, of course the garden could look better as I've let it go a bit with the weeds but it's still giving me something everyday so I guess I can get away with being a bit lazy. I'm planning on a whole new look veggie garden after this season, I'll be putting in boxed in garden beds, not for any real reason just to add to the backyard a bit so this time next year I can sit in my little spot watching everything grow around me. I'll put some photos up on how the backyard looked when I first moved it and how it's looking now.  I've been lucky enough to have a friend working in a wholesale nursery and he's been giving me heaps of plants to help sex up the backyard so it's cost me nothing other than a little bit of hard work planting, of course they are only seedlings but in about 2 years from now it's going to look great.  I'm not much into the ornamental garden (working on it that is, love the look of them) so I've only been getting perennials not annuals as I don't have enough time for the veggie garden as it is so I don't really want to spend time on a ornamental garden once I've got it all up and running.

On the site I'm still finishing the updates and they will be up as soon as I've done them, you would have seen that I've done quite an update on the companion planting, the Herb section is just waiting for some of the herbs that I've grown to be big enough to take photos and the Canning section will be coming soon I'm just trying to get all the right info on everything so I don't have to worry about it once it's up.  I'm going to have to do a course I think on websites as I'm having troubles getting this site up to a standard that I'd like it to be (a whole new look) but I still have a play to see if I can come up with something and have just got another program to see if that makes it easier.

The Garden looks great
Well I can't be happier with the garden and it's come on well, I've already picked over 4kg of green beans and I'm picking just about everything else in the garden, there are plenty of photos for you to look at click here to see how it's been going. I have had a lot of trouble getting stuck into the updates and the Weekly Diary so I've changed it to a monthly diary for now that way it will be what it says it is.  I've just finished the update for the companion planting which has lots more veggies and some herbs in it to help you all out when ready to plant, I've still got to finish the Herb section, update the freezing section and get started on the canning pages, I have started on all of them but it will still be a couple of weeks before I put them up, I'm also working on changing the look of the site but as yet haven't come up with something that I think with be easier and look nice with out taking to long to load but I'll keep at it and with some luck it will be a new look site in a few months from now.
Getting things going for summer 15-10-02
Well I've been very busy in the garden over the past couple of weeks trying to get everything in and I can tell you that I'm half way there so far.  I've put in Corn, Beans, Peppers (most of last years that I put in pots and kept in the glasshouse and have now put back into the ground), so far 1 tomato plant but that's because of the glasshouse problems (read below) and I will be putting some more in but not as many as last year.  I have also put in 1 eggplant and may also grow some from seed (again glasshouse problem).  I have dug all the ground and put down blood and bone as well as dynamic lifter, I will be putting another update in a few days to the diary to let you all know what else I have put in, till then....
Troubles in the glasshouse 12-09-02
So much for writing in here on a weekly bases I'll have to try a lot harder than I have been.  Anyway on to the problems, I've not long had a glasshouse and it's been great getting things started early and I did have heaps almost ready to put in the ground for next month but something is eating everything and because I've been working nights (don't do it you never get used to sleeping through the day and always tired) I can't get out there to see what it is to stop the problem.  In this seed tray you can see things are starting to go well but everything you see has been eaten (if you have any ideas please send me a email kane@myveggiegarden.freeservers.com).   I'll ring one of my local nurseries to see if they can help but it's just a huge problem at the moment and I have to start again as whatever it is has eaten just about everything I put in there.  Other than that the veggie garden has been moving very slowly as I just haven't been spending enough time in it at the moment and it's full of weeds.  Snow peas are doing well and the broad beans look to be coming on well but I do need  to help them out a bit and get stuck into the weeding.

On a good note I have been eating some very nice Broccoli and my puppies are almost not puppies at all click if you wish 1,2,3,4,5 the black one went through a bit of a hard time as he broke a bone in his shoulder but after a lot of money :-) and some time he is back to 100%.  I've also been trying to save some time with the weeds by putting down some black weed mat and also some black plastic next to each other so I can see which one does the better job, I think it will be the weed mat as it still lets the water through but time will tell.

It's been a while and everything is going great
It seems to take me longer and longer to write in here, but I've done heaps in the backyard and it's looking much better. All the veggies I talked about last time are going great and I picked my first lot of spinach, some went into the freezer and some was cooked up straight away and I can tell you it taste great.

I've put in my glasshouse/hothouse and I've got lots of plants in there for the backyard (not veggies) and I'll put a little section up for that. I haven't done much else other than that but I think once I get photos up you will see it was worth it.

As more go in 04-04-02
Well I've put the snow peas/peas and broad bean in and the rest is going great guns at the moment, I've also received more Broccoli so I'll be putting even more of them in and I already have about 40-50 plants in as it is, but the more the better as I don't normally put to much in over the cooler months and try to build up the soil for the summer months.  This is why I'm growing so many pea/snow peas this year, so I can dig it back into the ground for the Nitrogen and I could also dry it out and use it as a mulch.  I've had to pull out all the Chinese Cabbage as it's only the ornamental variety and no good for eating, Oh well.

I've cut all the peppers off and ended up with a nice little crop and I'm looking forward to next years crop as I've picked up some more plants from my friend.  Also don't forget that you are better off keeping pepper plants in for the second year as you get a much better crop and an earlier crops as well they are perennials not Annuals and will last 3-4 years if you keep the frost away from them, just before coming back into season prune back and watch them do 3 times better than the year before, this is a good idea for cooler areas as the growing season for peppers isn't very long and many of you may have found in the past that once the plant was getting to a good size winter would set in and you didn't get much fruit off them.

The new season starts 20-03-02
Well a lot has happened since I last wrote in here and not all what I was hoping for.

The veggie garden ended up doing ok in the end with Tomatoes everywhere, I've been able to pick about 40kg in the end and make lots of sauce that I'm sure will taste just great and I'll be freezing lots to make some nice home made Tomato soup for the upcoming cooler months, I've also been able to pick lots of nice Peppers, all different kinds too.  I ended up with 3 very large Pumpkins that will be nice to try.  The Zucchini and  Beans both did well but I was unable to get enough time this year to make the most of them and  will be using most of the Beans as seed for next years crop.

One of my puppies has had an injury that needed surgery on his shoulder but he should make a full recovery and this has taken up a lot of my time and money :-), but I'm just happy that he will be running around again soon.  I'm still to take more photos and put up the ones that I've been planning to put up for the past few months but all will happen and thank God I've got 3 weeks off very soon.

I've started the Winter patch already with Brussels sprouts, Chinese Cabbage, Broccoli and Spinach.  I'll be adding lots of Peas/Snow Peas and Broad beans as well.

The picking has started 27-02-02
Today I picked 4kg of nice red Tomatoes and I'm looking forward to eating them, I did pick some before today and used them in a sauce and they were lovely.  I've also been picking chilies and adding them to just about anything and they are just great.  That pumpkin that I picked the other week looks like it was underdone even though it tasted quite nice but I've left some others on and they are now a nice scattered color of orange and yellows, so I'll have to pick one very soon and see if it's more like a pumpkin than the other one.

I'm sorry that update in this meant to be weekly dairy have been more fortnightly but sleep is very hard to come by at the moment with the new pups that need to be worn out before I get a chance to sleep and of course sleeping when your not tired doesn't help, then when you are they aren't :-).  Still getting around to resizing the photos that will be on there way, something for you to look forward to..

Going red 10-02-02
The veggie garden is starting to get going a bit now and it looks like I'll be picking some Tomatoes tomorrow and I can tell you that I'm very much looking forward to that.  I picked a Pumpkin last week and I think I may have picked it a bit early but this didn't seem to matter to much as I liked it all the same.  It was the "Rouge vif d'Emtampes" and tasted nice but nothing like a Pumpkin more like a chocco, which people in warmer area's would know what I'm talking about (may have the spelling wrong).  Photos will be coming soon.
Weather looking up 23-01-02
The weather is starting to imitate a summer now and with some luck my tomatoes may just ripen which would be really nice :-).  As I told you all earlier I've planted 4 different types of Pumpkins and one of them (Rouge vif d'Entampes) is going great guns, the others are coming on slowly but I did plant them a bit later than those.  The "Rouge vif d'Entampes" seems to be a yellow skinned Pumpkin so it should be interesting to see what it's like.

Please don't ask me what the common name is for that variety is as I have no idea and have just copied what it says on the packet, which happens to be from the Diggers club.  I became a member there not to long ago and can tell you that I'm very happy with them indeed.  If you live in Australia it's well worth looking into be coming a member as they have free seeds all the time and some that you would never pick up from your local store, it can be fun just trying out all the different veggies.

I also told you about the orange tree that I transplanted not long ago, well that's doing great at the moment and I will have photos very soon showing you the back from the dead tree that looks like it will be giving me some very nice juicy oranges before to long.  I'll also be putting up the photos of the veggie from this year, now that my hours at work are becoming normal again.

Things on the move 14-01-02
Well the weather still being not what it should hasn't stopped things moving on in the veggie garden, most veggies including Zucchini, beans, Peppers and most of the Pumpkins are all starting to do well.  I'll be taking some photos soon so you all can have a look. Other than that there's not a lot of change at the moment but will keep you all in touch on what is happening and will probably add to this weeks diary in the next couple of days.

On the work note, I'll be back to normal hours as from next week starting 20th so I'll be working hard on getting all the updates that I've been saying will happen up and running, this won't include the small videos as yet, as I am still deciding which camera will be best for what I need.

Weather still interesting 03-01-02
Well it's been a little longer than one week since I've wrote in here and I can tell you that sleep is very hard to get right now, I've just got two puppies that don't allow me to sleep very much and I've been doing 11 and 12 hour shifts, 7 days a week at work.  Being a holiday area you try and make some more money this time of year.

The garden has been doing well and I'll put some photos up very soon to show you all but the weather is still wet and cold even coming into January but doesn't seem to be stopping anything from growing at this stage, what it is doing though is causing the weeds to grow very quickly, so quickly that I'm finding it hard to keep up with them with all this work that I'm doing.  I haven't planted anything else at this stage but will be looking at doing that maybe this weekend.

Not so great start 17-12-01
Well it hasn't been then best start to a season I can tell you with the weather playing all sorts of tricks and not really getting over 20c till now and still having problems.  I've had to to reseed a few things because it's been to cold to germinate, but things are looking better and with some luck I'll be able to tell you how good things are going in the next couple of weeks.  I've also transplanted a orange tree that someone was ripping out of the ground and I thought it was such a waste and asked if they'd mind if I took it off there hands and of course they said yes as it saved them a trip to the tip, I'll be making a section on this with photos showing you how it's going.

Things that I've planted so far are 4 types of Pumpkins, 6 types of Tomatoes, 2 types of Zucchini's, 3 types of beans and some Hot Peppers of different kinds, I'll be taking photos of these and how everything's going as well as planting much more very soon and with some luck we will be getting some better weather so I can get things on the move.
